Sicily / Monreale

Grandson of the Norman Roger II, Guillaume II began the construction of the cathedral of Monreale in 1174. It is one of the nicest examples of Norman building in Sicily.

The wonderful interior is covered by the 42 mosaics. From Byzantine style inspiration, they represent scenes of the Old and the New Testament. The cloister illustrates an arabo-Norman structure.
