Messina is on the north-eastern point of Sicily, in front of the continental Italy. In the past, before the earthquake of 1908, the strait of Messina was narrower and knew violent sea currents.
In the Greek mythology, this passage was kept by Charybdis and Scylla, two monsters, first one took the form of a swirl drinking the sea water, trapping the ships and the second, girl of the goddess of the sea Aecates, devoured the sailors with its six heads from a cave on the continental coast.

Very old city, Messina suffered a lot during the earthquake in 1908, catastrophe which caused the death of 84000 inhabitants and destroyed most of the city. Rebuilt, it knew important bombardments by the allies in 1943.
In the VIIIth century BC, a Greek colony was founded here. Its history was always related to the sea, strategic node for the trade and place which knew many exchanges, not only products, but also artistic currents and ideas.
