Akrai

Akrai is the archaeological site of a colony founded towards 664 BC by Greeks originating from Syracuse. In its first time, it was a defensive station.

Akrai has became the actual Palazzolo Acreide which was destroyed in the IXth century by Arabs.
It knewn its apogee at the time when its neighbor and allied Syracuse dominated most part of Sicily, in the IIIrd century BC.
As the rest of the island, it was conquered thereafter by Rome.

It kept a small Greek theatre from which pavements of the orchestra go back to the Roman epoch. Several necropolis were built in the rock by the Christians.
