Agrigento is near the southern part of Sicily, its origins go back from the 581 BC when Akragas was founded by colonists coming from Gela, eastward from Agrigento, on the coast.

The archaeological zone of Agrigento is registered to the world heritage of the UNESCO since 1997 :
Greek colony Founded in the VIe BC, Agrigento is one of the main Mediterranean cities. Vestiges of the splendid doric temples which dominate the ancient city, including today one great part that remains intact under the fields and the orchards, and testify about its supremacy and its pride. A selection of zones of excavations brings explanations on the Hellenistic and Roman city and the funerary practices of its prechritians inhabitants.

Although the valley of the temples is the main tourist attraction, the city itself merit to be discovered, for example walking among its medieval streets.
